I am getting ready to start on a Med-Surg unit, and will be using Insulin for the first time in years. Can't remember which one is used IV. Can someone help?
An order should specify the kind of insulin. But, just as a refresher, other kinds of insulin are metabolized differently and so are contraindicated IV, they have to be absorbed sub-q. I honestly don't know about the newer insulins where onset is faster than even Regular, maybe some of the others know if they are used IV ?????
Amen. Regular is right. I am an L&D RN and we do insulin drips regularly. Regular is the only one that can be given IV. Was a Med/Surg RN for 10 years.
