Do you get paid more being med-surg certified?

I am going to a 2 day class review for med-surg certification. I don't know any nurse who is med surg certified on my unit. For those of you who are certified, what difference does it make to obtain this certification in your job- do you get paid more? In what way does it pay off?

I have my med-surg certification from the Academy of Med-Surg Nurses (CMSRN), and although it doesn't directly mean more money at my facility, they did pay for the certification, and it counts towards our "Clinical Ladders" which are achievement levels we can earn that are worth $.50 or $1.00 more an hour.

The only CMSRN at our hospital is the Nurse Educator but they are bringing a review course to our hospital for all the interested RNs. I don't know how many of us will be there but I signed up.

Other than a Med-Surg review course, where would I get an online review course or a book to study for the Med-Surg exam. Is there a formal book with the type of questions they ask on the Med-Surg certification exam? Thanks...

I remember the day I took my certification exam. I was so nervous I left work with the narcotic keys after counting off with the oncoming nurse and almost got put on probation because of it! But, I passed and got my RN,C. I never got a pay raise. I did get a rose that I was given on Nurse's Day when it came around the next year that I got to wear that day at work. The next year after getting my BSN as well I was promoted into supervision. What I also got was a feeling of accomplishment. No one can take that away from me. I also went on later and got a CRNI, national certification in IV therapy. Same thing. Great feeling of accomplishment. Within my IV Therapy Department it was looked on as quite a feather in my cap since this is not an easy test to pass, but we did not get more pay for it. I do have one sister-in-law who I will trot out all my certifications and degrees when she is around if she starts up on me with her lying and BS just to run her out of my site.

Don't worry about getting paid more. Do this for yourself so you will smile inside. See if work will reimburse you for the cost of the test (worth a try).

Can you still take the ANCC's certification with an Associates degree?
