Who Knew?

Who knew
There would be
Laughter
Behind the bars and barbed wire?

Laughter --
To bind us,
To heal our differences,
To remind us of our humanity.

Who knew
There would be
Caring
Behind the bars and barbed wire?

Caring --
For each other and about each other,
Despite our differences,
Because we are all part of humanity.

Who knew
There would be
Humans
Behind the bars and barbed wire?

Humans --
Who laugh,
Who care
Who exist.
