Everyday when I leave for work, I pack my little blue bag. It is nothing special, just clear on one side, blue on the other and a zipper on the top. In it I have my swipe badge with the horrible washed out picure and my name and facility and that I am a nurse.

In it also, are assorted pens. Pens that I have bought at Walmart, pens from pharmacy reps(my favorites), and pens that appear out of nowhere and find their way into my bag.

I have some spare change and a few dollars to ward off the hunger pangs of not having anytime for lunch or dinner. I really should pack something healthy tomorrow.

A tube of chapstick, an old half used lipstick and mascara about rounds things out.......but if I could these are the things I wish I could bring..

Extra Patience--for when I have more phone calls than ears and more families that are all demanding my attention at the same time.

A 90 minute clock--so that when time is flying by and I see that I have 17 patients to chart on and only 30 minutes till time to leave that I woud have enough time to finish and still have time to do one more round.

Hugs--One for each of my residents. And an extra one for the family member who has been at a bedside vigil for her mom who is in her last hours of life.

Prayers--Silent ones, joyful ones, one word ones. Prayers that say thank you Lord for your support and help and ones that simply ask for help.
But all of them from the heart.

Extra set of hands--Hands that are not to busy to hold someone else's. Hands that are gentle when removing a dressing. Hands that can sense fear, understand pain, give a gentle squeeze of reassurance, hands that could heal with a touch.

Eyes--Eyes that could see into a person who can not speak. Eyes that would notice every hurt. Eyes that would calm the new resident that is scared and wants to go home.

But wait, I have all of these already. All the help I need comes from the one who has chosen me to be a nurse. The Great Physician Himself.
The One who sustains me, carries me, loves me and is beside me every day that I go to work. Thank you Jesus for all these things and more.
