Ortho/Neuro or MICU

Hi I am a bit confused because this will be my first nursing job...I was offered a job Ortho/Neuro unit in my very much like hospital, but since they don't have a fulltime job available, I will be TOC (temp on call). I need a full time job so badly...and another hospital which is 50 miles away had a full time job for me at MICU. Since this is my first time, please help me what to do!!!

Hiya and welcome to the site, it is difficult to give the advise that you need as only you know exactly what you need. You will need to consider the financial implications of working part time and maybe look at the travelling costs to see if this will even out the difference. Also is it worth asking the ortho/neuro unit what the chance of a fulltime position being available in the near future is. If it is likely then it may be worth taking the TOC contract as a foot in the door.

Hope you get what you want and need, good luck

Re: Ortho/Neuro or MICU

Hi, thanks for your time...I was enlighten to your reply. I weigh the difference and its a good start to start my foot on the floor working TOC at Ortho/Neuro. I was told to have a chance to be a FT in the future. This is what I want to do, but I was tempted to the other offer. . Anyway, thanks a lot...this means so much to me! I'll take Ortho/Neuro! God bless you!

Re: Ortho/Neuro or MICU

Is there a third option of full time near you?

If you are only part time (on call only) what type of orientation are they going to give you. As a new grad you need a good orientation more than you need anything else.

I would be worried that you won't be comfortable as a nurse if you are only working occasionally. Nursing school teaches you so little of what you need as a nurse. You need time and repetition in order to get your organization and assessment skills down.
