Re: In Icu Are Is There A Preference For Whites

We rotate holidays in the ER and it seems to work rather well. I do believe if someone brought up anything as personal as my ethnicity as being an influential factor in my obtaining a position I would immediately report that to their supervisor. People with that mentality have no business in healthcare. One might question if their efforts in care are shadowed by the same prejudice as their preconceptions regarding potential staff.

Re: In Icu Are Is There A Preference For Whites

I did a quick mental review of the colleagues I work with and had to laugh...to start with,at least 25 % of us were born outside the US. Our recent hires include people born in the Phillipines, France, and Russia. All have accents! Other colleagues include African American, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Mexican ethnicities. A Canadian and American Indian also come to mind... and that's just the nurses in the ICU! If someone is giving you a bad time about your race or ethnicity you should talk to your nurse manager. Discrimination and/or harassment is illegal. You should be judged only on your nursing excellence, not the color of your skin or where you were born.

Re: In Icu Are Is There A Preference For Whites

As a new grad RN (double minority (male) ) I have applied for jobs in two almost predominately caucausion hospitals and have not been offered positions for Speciality or Med-Surg Jobs, However every diverse hospital I ever applied to I was offered positions, mostly in my first choice and on the spot!

So go where there is diversity I believe it makes a difference!!!
