Hyperglycemia

So, I know that undergoing major trauma (such as open heart surgery) or major infections can cause hyperglycemia even in non-diabetic patients. But are there other things that can cause hyperglycemia in somebody who's not diabetic? This was a topic of discussion at work today.

Re: Hyperglycemia

some medications increses the level of glucose in the blood like hydrocortisone, and stressful environment may contribute to this..

Re: Hyperglycemia

Steroids, TPN, infection, trauma, illness, stress, etc. can make a patient hyperglycemic. Also hyperglycemia can be a symptom of an underlying illness such as Cushing's syndrome or a niacin overdose.

Re: Hyperglycemia

Anything that causes the body to perceive as "stressful" will have an effect of the glucose levels.
