we have been discussing this today and have not come up with an answer. I currently have a patient admitted with diffuse CAD and CHF. He is on a Natrecor gtt @ .005 mcg/kg/min. He is 104 kg and BNP is 3212.
The question: "How accurate is the BNP while on a Natrecor gtt?"
My completely uneducated guess would be very minimal change d/t the fractional amount we are giving.
Does anyone else have any input? Thanks in advance.

It's not accurate if drawn while he was on natrecor. Natrecor is synthetic BNP.....

BNP should be drawn before or after the drip is initiated.

AMEN!!!!!! I HATE when docs order a BNP while on Natrecor! Pointless....but I am just the nurse what do I know?

thanks for your responses. I guess I should have given more details. He presented with BNP>6500 without Natrecor and is now trending down, while on the Natrecor gtt. I do understand that it is a recombinant form of B-type naturietic peptide and it will provide a falsely high lab value. We just thought maybe there was some formulary or equation to figure a more accurate measurement.

hmmmm - The extra details are nice, but the BNP should still be drawn after the drip is stopped next.
