Carbon Dioxide triggers breathing

Hello, i have become brain dead !!!, i was on placement the other day within a medical icu, and i was being asked random questions on the spot about resp, cardio, neuro etc. However one question was "What triggers us to breath and why?", i knew that carbon dioxide is the primary driving force of breathing, but i couldnt get my brain into gear and tell her why!!!, would somebody be able to remind me on the physiology of breathing.

Many thanks.
