Blood Culture

Is the blood culture from central line the same as culture of central line tips for patients with high white blood counts? The doctor ordered blood cultures from central line and PIV, and discontinue central line + culture tip. I did discotinue the line and send the culture, but forgot to draw blood for culture before taking out that line fast.

I am so upset.

Re: Blood Culture

When doing a blood culture it's usually from two different sites. I believe the doc ordered a blood culture from blood drawn from the line and a peripheral vein, and then the tip when the line is pulled. Instead of beating yourself up, call the doc during normal hours, and just tell him that honestly you screwed up and that you are sorry. Ask him if you want it QA's and 99% chance he'll say no. Humaness!
Don't go into how busy it was, just how sorry you are it happened. Honesty usually works the best. Best.
