Hello to all out there. I know I haven't posted in a while, but school somehow tends to take up so much time.

Recently, I have been wondering if there are any nurses out there who have any major vision problems, but more so that of double vision (diplopia). I have double vision, but it has never given me any problems. I am able to block out the "other" vision, but usually my mind just ignores it. (Before any question arise...Yes, I do drive, shoot firearms, write, read, draw, and anything else you can do, I can do better. It only comes in handy when looking at a fair-looking lady because I see two of her.)

So, if you have heard of nurses having double vision, or another major vision problem, let me know, as I am very interested to hear about it.

Well, I am a bit worried that I'm just starting out and have developed presbyopia. Great timing for med passing and all those other tiny visuals I'll need to assess in the coming decades, huh?

I'll just be one more nurse w/ a pair of reading glasses on a chain around her neck. I just hope they are acceptable where I am accepted for a position. Still in the interview process!

Well yes, several nurses have vision problems. I myself have double vision, nystagmus, myopia, and I am deaf. You should go to the forum of nurses with disabilities on this web page. You will find alot of nurses who have limitations they deal with. Glad to meet ya.

As long as the disability doesn't interfere with the job you're applying for, you should not have a problem.

I lost the vision in my right eye to a detached retina 18mos ago and then fell off my bed (misjudged the edge of it due to no peripheral vision) breaking my right leg and right forearm. Now I have 1% vision in my rt eye which only makes it harder for me to see clearly. I do still drive day and night, but can't seem to get a job. I have been on 36 interviews and finally stopped telling the whole truth about WHY I HAVE BEEN OUT OF WORK FOR SO LONG. I have a job offer traveling and am an ER nurse of 37yrs....so I'll be starting lots of IVs. I don't even KNOW IF I CAN STILL DO THIS SKILL and want to know if anyone else is one-sighted and are you still able to start IVs? Any suggestions on where I could go to check my skills without alerting everyone to the fact that I can only see out of one eye? I hear there are LOTS of one-sighted RNs but I sure can't locate them. I really could use this travel job, but I am not going to take it until I know for certain I can start IVs. I'm the one everyone used to come TO to start difficult sticks, so this has me so depressed I can hardly function. I am winging it right now....and places like Wal-mart and grocery stores won't hire me when they see my resume of 37yr of being a RN. I have titanium plates in my leg and forearm but can use them and can fake that part....the lifting and pulling even without one rotator cuff (lost it in 2005 from the years of pulling and lifting). Any suggestions are welcome.

I got CMV retinitis when my CD4 count was low,have no vision in my left eye and in my right I have a blind spot that is a little less than 1/4 of my visual field.I had implants in each eye that released medicine directly to the retina this was a new technique,until then you just went blind,so even though I might complain about my vision at least I still have some of it.The last time I went for a checkup at the eye hosp I was told I now have cataracts and glaucoma in my right eye.So far I'm still able to work,Thinking maybe I should start learning Braille though.

Had surgery for massive retinal detachment recently. My lens was removed during the procedure. Prognosis for any vision in eye is poor to none. I am an RN and am going through some huge mental adjustments and learning a whole new set of coping skills. Well that's my goals. Right now I'm scared and paranoid that I won't be able to work anymore...that someone will knock at my front door and ask me to surrender my drivers license...etc. Could use some support, please.

Hi Dean,sorry to hear about your vision problems.When I lost the vision in my left eye it took a while for me to adjust to the change in depth perception.I was dangerous for a while,every meal I spilled something,missed the table when I went to set something down,what a mess!!Gradually I adjusted to it though.I am now working part time with no problems.Since I have a blind spot in my right eye too I don't drive anymore.My Father was blind in one eye and drove with no problems so there is hope for you.

Thanks Terry for your sharing and support. A home heath agency actually hired me yesterday knowing all about my loss of vision in left eye. Said they were willing to work with me. There is hope like you said. Thanks again. May God smile on you each day.
