Re: Nurses with double vision or other vision problems?

I'm a nursing student who was born with cataracts as I result I only have vision out of my right eye and only wear a contact lens in that eye. I can't drive but I can tell you that I do every nursing skill I am asked to do. I have to overcompensate but it is possible. I hang IV's next semester I will start IV's. I have done both Sub-Q and IM injections.

It all just takes time, practice and figuring out what is the best way to do the skill for you.

Hugs and I hope that helped.
Janine

Oh my goodness. I never saw this post before. It is really inspiring to hear many of you overcame your vision problems. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to become a nurse! Thank you all of you for sharing.

Re: Nurses with double vision or other vision problems?

I had double vision many many years ago. My chiropractor told me to quit eating junk food and he did a lot of manipulations of my neck and it went away entirely after about 2 months. I am going to have cataract surgery next month and then both of my eyes should be in great shape.

I was blind from birth in my left eye and worked for 27 years. I dont work anymore due to other issues, but am now told I have cataracts forming in both my good eye and my bad eye, plus I had a posterior vitreal detachment in my good eye that left me with what is called cellophane maculopathy. Good thing I cant work anymore, would pity my patients.

When I first started this thread, I thought a few people would post, but not as many who already have.

Re: Nurses with double vision or other vision problems?

Just for another encouragement for nurses / students with vision probems...I was able to start 5/7 IVs today and the only problem was with those "disappearing" veins.

Re: Nurses with double vision or other vision problems?

I was born with congenital nystagmus and am a new RN now. Sometimes I find that it affects me when I try to look on the wall for manual blood pressure readings but other than that, I do fine. When I do find that my vision starts to shake, I just change my head position so that it doesn't shake as bad. Some people look at me funny, but I usually just smile and educate them about nystagmus a bit. Anyone else out there with it?

Re: Nurses with double vision or other vision problems?

Several have already posted. They are older posts, so yes several of us here do have nystagmus and other issues. Welcome to the post.
