Received my first case yesterday - WAHOO!!! Although I must admit I was a little apprehensive being handed a huge box with about 2000 sheets of paper in it! But I think it's going well - I've got everything chronologically organized, now I just gotta wade through all this stuff and figure out what was going on!

Thanks to all the great advice you guys have given to us newbies - it's made the whole process of getting going alot easier -being able to talk to those of who who've been there before. And a big wave to Siri - THANKS!

I'm still plugging away....how did you get your first case? I'm kinda bummed after listening to some of my V. Milazzo stuff. In one of the tapes, they said that you need at least $1000 to $10000 for marketing yourself I don't know about you guys, but I don't have that kinda cash just sittin' around. What have you guys done for marketing?

I started with one attorney while working full time; he referred me on to others. I've had enough business to keep me afloat for short periods, but not enough to live on - but then I'm not the type to go out and market myself. Have used it more as 'extra' income. Also, I'm more of the consulting nurse - lots of chronologies and tables, deposition and trial support - having seen a plaintiff attorney rip holes in unsuspecting nurses, I just didn't figure I wanted to go there! I did work in a couple of law firms and loved 2, hated one!!!

I'm not sure about the VM way of doing things...the thing with marketing {as the nurse in a med mal office} we got a LOT of very beautiful [and probably very expensive] marketing material and they pretty much went into a box of marketing material. Our nurse experts were all found word of mouth directly from the unit that we needed an expert in. I finally caved this week and put my VM videos on ebay...someone may appreciate them...but it wasn't the direction I wanted to go!

Hello, Valaren,

By no means did I spend a great deal of money on my marketing package. I was able to have a good package for about $1500.000. That included business cards, stationery with logo, envelopes, folders, briefcase, business suits (2), as well as a few smaller items I desired such as personalized pens for PR.

Now, if you do not have a computer (which obviously you do), you could push that figure upwards towards the $3000.00 mark. Then, if you do not have access to a medical library, you could push the figure up even further. But, the library is not really a part of the marketing pack. Comes later for the cases you will receive.

I also, have my business website. incorporated this year, attended an apprenticeship, created a newsletter, and, purchased the needed supplies for my business. That dollar amount increases dramatically, but, you have to have these things as you go on.

Sound as if you have a good start towards a full time career as a legal nurse, Debby.

I can understand about the expert testimony, too. It is most frightening. The plaintiff attorney tries to discredit your testimony and literally tear up your resume'. My first time was a rather eye-opening experience.

I am sorry you were not able to utilize the Milazzo tapes. I gather you are CLNC. Should you ever need me to assist you in furthering your LNC career, please feel free to contact me. Not that you couldn't do it on your on. It sounds like you know exactly what you want.

Thanks Siri - I recently became a single mom of a teenager and while I would love to consult with attorneys regularly enough to make it a full time job - I don't think it's the right step at this point. I do have a few files coming my way from time to time - I prefer PI and PL cases, hate med mal, so I am self limited. BUT am working as a nurse analyst for a company that provides expert testimony on crash, velocity, mostly MVI's and a few aircraft/boat cases. Nurses - 11 of us, prepare the medicals in much the way I did/do for attorneys, plus it's full time - which I SOOOO need right now. basically, the best blend of the self employed LNC and full time job!

I have helped a few folks into the business - so it's a subject that is near and dear to me!
