Hello! I am new to the board and would appreciate any input. I have been interested in Legal Nurse Consulting for a while now. I have been offered a job with a major Medical Malpractice Insurer as an in house Claims Representative. The job entails developing ingestigative data and structuring a basis for the appropriate disposition of a claim. They offer extensive training in the legal/insurance aspects of medical malpractice. Once you are up to speed the case load would be about 150 cases.
There is also a Field position(with extensive travel) that involves interviewing doctors and reviewing the medical records, basically doing the beginning legwork on the case to hand off to the in house claims person. The claims director said she feels the in house position is more similiar to a Legal Nurse Consultant role in that you are working the case to completion. Would this be the right direction to go in?

It sounds like their are similarities. My guess it is not the same. With that said there are a lot of areas in nursing that have similarities to what a LNC does. Case Managers do some related work, as do life care planners, even the routine chart review has some of the same aspects.

However, LNCs are how can I put this. LNC is to a claims reviewer like a L+D nuse is to a Peids nurse.

Maybe that is not the best analogy (I was up all night and have not been to bed at all.) However, maybe you can get a bit of a picture from that. You will have some overlap but they each is its own field.

In any case If you decide to take an LNC course it would not in my opinion be lost in this new area.
