My name is Mary. I am 57 I am in good shape I even work out, but Hospital nursing is getting very hard. I am board. I have my masters in nursing. I love nursing. But I don't have the passion any more. With the continous short staffing. I have worked every where in the hospital.ICU to SPU. I have worked out-side the hospital. I have become interested in legal nurse consultant. Does any one have any experience. I am a single parent. my children are all grown-up and have homes and families. I need something to jump start my life. I would continue working my 3 8hr shifts. This pays health care.

Browse all the threads in the legal nurse forum and you will get some eye opening tips on whether this might be for you. Vickie Milazzo also has a free introductory course that you can take to get a taste of LNC work.

Unless you have a good bit of disposable income to invest, I would not recommend this route if you are only interested in this as a part time/"fun" endeavor. Today's technological advancements and the expectations of clients are high, which translates into more money needing to be spent on marketing and business overhead in order to be successful in this competitive field.

There are jobs available for LNCs as employees where you would not need to have as much startup capital but those jobs aren't usually advertised where you can easily find them. Those jobs would likely require you to be available to them and working 3 shifts a week might hinder that.

Your advanced degree would certainly be helpful to you and prospective clients.

I always advise those who are interested to sincerely search their reasons for considering the LNC career. You must have a love of the Law, be able to search/research for hours on end, be able to apply SOC/SOP to any situation, and be able to suffer disappointment when time and again, you are denied attorney interviews and/or unable to secure cases. I will not sugar-coat it for you; it is a difficult career path. It is like starting all over with a brand new career only this time, you have to be business savvy as well as nursing savvy. BUT, you can be successful for many are......

So, in saying this, make a list of pros/cons. Like RN1989 said, you will need "disposable" money for the initial setup (including education if this is the path you choose as well as initial business start up expenses).
