which Legal nurse consult. program to take?

I have been a critical care nurse for almost 2 years in the Birmingham, AL area. My husband is a new attorney and is working independently with another attorney. They do some medical cases but not enough to keep me busy full-time. I have considered taking a legal nrs. consultant program but I dont know if I have enough work experience and I am nervous about having enough work with other attorneys besides my husband. I have received all the info about the Vicki Milazzo program but it is no expensive ($11,000 for all the extra mentoring). Which program should I take and what are the differences in titles? Are the extras (resources, mentoring, etc) offered with the Vicki Milazzo VIP program worth the money? What if I invest in the courses and exams and then have no work? Has that ever happened to anyone?

Thanks!
Courtney

Hello,

Valid concerns about expense of the program.

The AALNC is very inexpensive in comparison. And, the basic education you receive from the Milazzo program and AALNC are equal. Both programs are excellent.

Check out the AALNC sticky thread in this forum:

Good luck with your decisions.

Re: which Legal nurse consult. program to take?

The AALNC course looks more realistic $$ wise.
But it states that in order to get certified you must:
1.Have a minimum of five years of experience practicing as a registered nurse. (I only have 2 years experience). Should I wait a few years b/f persuing this career further?

2.And must have evidence of 2,000 hours of legal nurse consulting experience within the past three years. How do you get these hours?

Thank you so much for you help!!
Courtney

Yes, you will need 5 years RN experience before taking the online course and in order to fulfill requirements for certification, you will have to be practicing as an LNC for the required hours necessary. The hours required for the latter are actual cases/work as LNC.

So are there any legal nurse certifications I qualify for now? If not, I guess that I should probably put it off for a while, right?

The Milazzo program does not require the RN to have X many years experience. But, I do not agree with this. One should work as an RN for at least 3-5 years in order to gain the experience necessary for the career.

I would suggest that you get at least 1 - 2 more years experience before undertaking the career path.
