Just curious....has anyone ever heard of doing an "early" annual? Not doing 3 quarterlies between annuals? We searched the RAI manual, and it only says that an annual must be done AT LEAST every year (I forget the exact number of days 'cause I'm tired and at home) but nothing prohibiting you from doing a full assessment as often as you like......

OK.... but why would you want to skip the quarterlies and just do a comprehensive assessment? Jeez that is a lot of extra work w/ no gain to it!

To capture therapy minutes.....and increase the CMI of a Medicaid patient......

But you still capture therapy minutes on quarterly assessments and this goes into the CMI. I really kind of think you are confused!?!

If you do only comprehensive assessments, you will be required to write RAPS every time and this gets really time consuming.

If therapy picks someone up... just do an early quarterly. Best practice is to have a monthly schedule posted in advance as to who is coming up as due. Give therapy a copy of this and request they screen those residents for therapy needs prior to the ARD. Then there is no need for an early assessment of any type.

How long have you been doing MDS's?

I've been doing this for three years. In Pennsylvania, only full assessments count towards the CMI. I don't know how it works in other states. You're right...the RAPS are certainly time consuming, but you do what you have to do.....

Yes, I'm confused on occasion....but this time I'm actually making sense. The confusion usually only sets in when I'm trying to memorize 50+ parts of the human skull....or when my child decides to wake me at 3am because she misses me. Other then that, I'm on target most of the time...

If you are trying to capture therapy minutes and improve CMI might I suggest you concider a significant change. If they are receiving therapy that would suggest they have changed in some areas. Just food for thought. Good luck. My state allows quarterly assessments to count in CMI.

Thanks for the suggestion! I always keep a look out for significant change, but sometimes it's just that the pt needs therapy for a new type of splint or family is requesting a dietary upgrade, and really can't justify a significant change. But I do keep it in mind.

Are there ANY other states that don't count quarterlies towards CMI? Am I the only one doing a zillion full assessments?
