what is informatics? can someone explain to me how do you get into this field?

Nursing Informatics is a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice. NI supports consumers, patients, nurses, and other providers in their decision-making in all roles and settings. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes and information technology.
There are multiple ways to enter this specialty .......from on the job training to formal degree/certification attainment to volunteering as a super-user. I encourage you to read previous posts (to this forum) by other Informatics Nurses to learn how they gained entry into this practice specialty.

I first got interested in informatics when I on contract with a HMO, and met a medical assistant who had been a superuser, and was then sent for training as an Epic Analyst.

Several years down the road I got an opportunity to answer an ad that offered a way out of bedside nursing. I answered and got the job, then found out the company being bought out by a bigger and much better employer.

I am now Epic ASAP ED, and Epic Ambulatory Certified, which equates to MO' money, MO' money! This is the first time I have ever (outside of working agency), felt I was being paid well, and enjoyed a very flexible schedule. This is without a doubt the best position I have EVER had hands down!-

akanini, you are going to have to complete your RN before you will be considered for such a spot unless you have a strong systems background.

The demand for this specialty is high everywhere. It's simply not a usual combination of skill sets.

Related to the LPN or BA degree to MSN I'd do my research and find out what kind of bridge (if any) degree programs there are. I know there are RN to BSN and RN to MSN bridge degree programs but I have no idea about whats out there related to LPN programs.
There are RNs, LPNs, lab technologists, Rad Techs and lots of other clinicians and para clinicians who have made the transition from clinical practice to more technical roles within healthcare informatics/healthcare information systems. It may depend on what the hiring manager is looking for in any given position he/she is trying to fill. You may luck up on an opportunity where your clinical experience as an LPN is sufficient or your skills as an educator/trainer, leader, change agent, etc are so strong that the organization is willing to train you on the IT/IS pieces. Either way your best bet is to do some research on what kind of opportunities are available in your geographic area. Check out hospital websites, job boards, Monster.com, etc and use the terms clinical analyst, informatics specialist, computer trainer, etc. See what the "requirements" are for these positions. This will give you an idea of what skills you need to aquire or strengthen.
Pick the brains of the IT folks at your hospital. Volunteer as a Super User for any new IT/computer projects that are planned at your organization. Does your doctor's office have an EMR? Ask questions about who did/does the training, etc. In short do your homework........ do your research.
