Recognizing National Nurses Week

Greetings NI Community,

In 1982 President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation on March 25,
proclaiming "National Recognition Day for Nurses" to be May 6, 1982. In
1990 The ANA Board of Directors expanded the recognition of nurses to a
week-long celebration, declaring May 6 - 12, 1991, as National Nurses
Week.

Today... please see the Dear Colleague letter send by Representatives
Johnson, Capps and McCarthy (all RNs) to all other members of the U.S.
House of Representatives encouraging them to co-sponsor their bill
(House Resolution 1086) recognizing National Nurses Week. Please feel free to share this with your colleagues.

H.Res. 1086

Recognizing National Nurses Week

Current cosponsors: Thompson, McDermott, McCollum, McNulty, Ellison,
Grijalva, Cohen, Filner, Lofgren, Upton, Goode, Stark, and Synder

Dear Colleague:

Nurses are advocates and health educators for patients, families, and
communities. Nurses are also experienced researchers, and their work
encompasses a wide scope of scientific inquiry including clinical
research, health systems and outcomes research, and nursing education
research.

Our nation's military relies on nurses for lifesaving aid as they serve
our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. Back in the States, these
healthcare professionals play an important role as the primary point of
contact between the patient and the world of healthcare providing
essential medical care for the patient and assistance for their
families.

National Nurses Week is the time each year when nurses are recognized
for the critical role they play in providing safe, high quality, and
preventative health care.

As nurses, we urge you to join us as original co-sponsors in support of
this House Resolution 1086, recognizing National Nurses Week, on May 6th
through May 12th. We know firsthand the significant contributions
nurses make as a part of healthcare delivery teams and to patient care.

This resolution is supported by the National Nurses Association. If you
would like to be a co-sponsor of this legislation or have any questions,
please contact Joye Purser at Joye.Purser2@mail.house.gov or Amy Brooks
at Interntx302@mail.house.gov or at 5-8885.

Sincerely,

/s Eddie Bernice Johnson /s Lois Capps /s
