Joint Commission Calls for National Health Information System
Health care stakeholders must develop a single, national data infrastructure to measure performance and track quality improvements nationwide, according to a Joint Commission white paper
http://www.jointcommission.org/Publi...a_Strategy.htm released by its data strategy roundtable, Modern Healthcare reports.
The roundtable proposed 22 principles to guide a national data infrastructure, including interoperable IT that supports the secure exchange of transparent, high-quality performance data across health care settings. The white paper also called for standardized definitions to measure the data.
Margaret VanAmringe, vice president of public policy and government relations for the commission, said that the health industry relies on performance information to identify improvement areas and make informed choices but that available data and standards are fragmented.
According to Modern Healthcare, the white paper is designed to connect those separate entities and provide a roadmap for providers (DerGurahian, Modern Healthcare, 3/6).
