Another Question

Hello Everyone
I am back to ask another question of the people here. Would a Bachelors in Computer Information Systems be a bette place to start than with a Bachelors in Nursing in order to move up to a Masters in Nursing Informatics. If anyone has any advice on the subject I would really appreciate there input. Thanks once again for your time.

Walter,
See my response to your other post titled "just found nursing informatics". If your ultimate goal is to get a Masters in NI then remember if you get a BS in another specialty (not nursing) there might be additional bridge course work you may be required to do for the MS because of the differences between course requirmens in a non-nursing undergraduate program and a nursing undergrad program. Talk to a councelor at the school you potentially will be seeking the MS degree from.

Another point- having a MS in NI (alone) will not get you a job practicing in this specialty and neither will a BS in IS/IT. Recruiters and hiring mangers are primarily looking for experienced professionals but there are entry level positions to be had for people who are motivated and willing to learn on the job.

Hello Angela

Thanks for the tip about having a MSN with a specialty in Informatics. That would be very depressing to have gone through everything nessecary to get an MSN then end up without a job.

Where or how can I find out about the entry level positions that are out there for a person that is motivated and willing to learn on the job. Because I am very ready to move on and do what I have to, to take the next step in my life.

I concur with Angela in that there would be a lot of bridge work. MS nursing degrees for informatics generally only accept licensed RNs who have a BS in nursing. In fact, most MS nursing degrees, except those specially designed for non-nurses, only accept RNs with BS in nursing degrees. For more details, check out the web page from U Maryland as an example = http://nursing.umaryland.edu/admis/index.htm
