Shingles Vaccine

Shingles Vaccine

The Advisory Commmittee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that everyone age 60 and older receive the Zostavax vaccine to prevent herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles. The recommendation includes those who have already had shingles.

I think the recommendation is from 60 - 64... the effectiveness of the vaccine decreases with age. Even though most insurances (including Medicare) aren't covering it, some of the heath departments in our area (Florida) are providing it to those who want it.

Re: Shingles Vaccine

I heard about this just after I had shingles a little over a year ago. I'd get vaccinated to prevent a second bout. I never want to live through that again.

Re: Shingles Vaccine

I received the vaccine when it was first approved in the US, about 10 years ago. I was aasked to get it when my titer came back low and I was going into the nursing program. I was a little hesitant to get a newly approved vaccine, so I spoke to an infectious disease doc and he said it had been used overseas for over 25 years with no problems. I got it and now I am glad I did with all the shingles pts. we get. You never find out until days later that they have it and I am thankful I am protected. I never had any problems with the vaccine itself and I haven't gotten shingles when other nurses did. It was expensive though; over $200 as I recall.
