nurses accepting telephone orders from other nurses

Has anyone ever heard of a nurse refusing to accpet a telephone order from another nurse for medication? This is one facility to another.

Once I took ortho pre-op orders from an ortho nurse calling from the ortho surgeon's office...consent for Sx, npo p mn, etc....I was told by my super that accepting these types of standing orders are acceptable....

Re: nurses accepting telephone orders from other nurses

I've occasionally taken phone orders from another nurse; but always ask for her full name and title to document the order as T.O, Dr. Sick/Jane Doe, RN/My name, RN. Once I had an issue with an MA from a doc's office who wanted to relay a doc's order-when I figured out that she was not a nurse, I told her I would have to take the order from a nurse or the doc herself...the MA got very offended, but put the doc on the line to give it to me directly.

My experience in the hospital I used to work in was identical to chelli73. It is the same as taking a verbal order from the circulating nurse working in OR w/a surgeon, in my opinion.

In my LTCF we take TOs everyday from the Dr.s nurses. We rarly ever get to actually talk to the Dr. (or should I say, have to talk to the Dr.) We relay info back and forth via a "remote" nurse and messaging system.

I often take MD orders from another nurse----about 99% of the time. I only know one doc who likes to call himself.

Actually, I did lots of research about this, because when I worked in LTC the docs MAs would always call to give TOs. I didn't feel comfy taking orders from a MA, so I contacted our BON. They sayed MAs, CNAs, even receptionist could give orders if instructed to by the doc. The doc is responsible for their actions, including TOs. At least here in NC. Weird.

My LTC facitily will not allow TO from another nurse - even from the CRNP. He/She has to fax the order, which of course gets a few of them in a tizzy.....
