Please help

Hi fellow nurses,

Why do some veins blow out when inserting a line? One of the nurses on my floor ask me this question and I couldn't provide the answer, however, I promise her that I will find out.

Thanks in advance for your answers

Re: Please help

There could be several different reasons. Advancing the cathetar to quickly, the needle goes through the vein, If the vein isn't big enough for the cathetar, or if the patient has bad veins like with some of the elderly.
