blood sampling from CVADs- return or discard?

Hi, All,

Just need to find out about blood sampling taken from Hickman's or Port a caths for Paediatric Oncology patients. Do you return the first blood drawn after a specimen has been taken or do you discard? What are your hospital protocols and policies on this procedure?

Re: blood sampling from CVADs- return or discard?

Our policy is to discard 10ml , then withdraw for specimen, b/c of the saline flush prior to withdrawing sample. Everyones PP may be diff, just ask to look at your PP manual.
