Well....I had my first day at clinicals and it was GREAT!!!! It was from 5:45 am to 2:45 pm at a hospital in the transitional care unit. After report from 3rd shift, we jumped right into it. I was assigned to one CNA and we were taking care of 7 patients. One w/MRSA, two w/comfort measures and all the rest were somewhat alert but confused.
Today was rough though for my first day. The CNA and I were feeding one of the 'comfort measures' patients (a VERY confused pt) and all of a sudden the patient started yanking on her PICC line, IVs, and pulled out her CATHETER!!! That was very MESSY!! Then later on the other 'comfort measures' patient started freaking out. This pt is on 5L of oxygen AND 100% thru a nasal cannula. She couldn't catch her breath and she was having chest and left arm pain. I thought she was dieing right there and I am thinking "Please God not on my first day". Come to find out she worked herself up. You know how you have that one special patient you just don't want to leave? Well.....This is mine. I stayed 50 min past my time and told her I WILL see you Wednesday (instead of 'I hope').
But the neatest thing I think I did today was helping a LPN take out about 65 staples and helping my CNA empty a colostomy bag. Those were my hightlights of the day.
Sorry that I did a little bit of rambling. I am so proud of myself because people around me were telling me that I am not gonna make it as a CNA because I don't like puke or poop or pee. But who does?? Wouldn't you be wierded out if someone said they DO like puke or poop or pee. Well I didn't get grossed out. And I made it thru my first day of clinicals!!!!!
Wow. that sounds like a great first day! Since I'm not taking a cna course till summer, I am living vicariously through all you current students. Keep up the great work, and thanks for the inspiration!
