My all time favorite. People who want to become nurses love this one! A perfect gift for a wannabe nurse:
Intensive Care, the Story of a Nurse by Echo Herron
I love, absolutely love to read this book! I have lived the same things she writes about in this book even though it was written in the mid 1980s.

Others:
Moll Flanders (Defoe) First English Novel..way cool! (He uses the term distemper that has nothing to do with dogs!)
Three Musketeers (Dumas) unedited virgin please. (notice the silly play on words!)

And
Scarlet Letter (Hawthorne) read this in eighth grade, loved it!
Fahrenheit 451 (Bradberry)
Letters From Carthage (James) contemporary witty and funny as heck!

I read so much from so many areas it's hard for me to pick "favorite" books.

One that had me riveted was The Poisonwood Bible. It was an interesting read along the lines of Mosquito Coast but it really resonated with me because my dad was raised in Congo as the son of an evangelist and his story mirrors that one in many ways. As a kid, my parents took us (via Peace Corps) to live in Zaire (Congo) for two years. Although our family didn't go quite as crazy as theirs did, it was a crazy-making place and time. A lot of the imagery that she described brought back strong sensory recollections.

I've enjoyed everything by Nelson DeMille

I like most of Robin Cook's stuff (just loved "Coma" which I read during a 2-week hospital stay) and the early Stephen King ("The Stand" continues to be a book I can read over and over and over).

I read a great book on the Six Day War entitled "Six Days of War."

Another "Oprah" book I read and liked was "Midwives".

My wife and I read "The Notebook" together and really enjoyed it.

I second "Tuesdays with Morrie."

"Battlfield Earth" was a wonderful story if you're into sci fi.

"Battle Circle" by Piers Anthony was very original and very entertaining.

"Of Mice and Men" has stayed with me.

"The World According to Garp" was a wonderful read.

I thought that I was the only person on earth who loved A Lantern in Her Hand. I read that for the first time when I was about 10yo and have reread it many times over the past 40 years. They made a really bad tv movie knock off which is not worth looking at. Thanks for reminding me of the book. I think the author was Bess Aldrich.

Yes, it was!! I remember checking it out so many times from the library as a kid... I think my mom read it to us first as a chapter book and that's how I loved it. Then they discarded it at the library and I really missed it. Luckily found it at a used book store a few years later. There just aren't many characters or stories out there like Abby Deal and her family... it never, ever gets old.

The Kite Runner...... Khaled Hosseini.......... excellent book.... the movie was just released on DVD this past week.... cant wait to see it...

Long Way Gone; Memoirs of a Soldier Boy..... Ishmael Beah..... this book brought tears to my eyes in so many places......

And I started and finished Double Cross by James Patterson last night..... cant wait til his next one comes out.
