history of nursing books you enjoyed?
|

I love nursing history. Any real good ones that you recommend? I love reading about the old diploma nursing schools and how different it was then. I recently read an article saying that nothing has really changed that much in terms of clinical practice. We used to get the clinical practice in the diploma schools, and then if we wanted to, we went back to college to get our BSN. Now we go to college and then we take externships, internships, residencies, mentor programs, and orientation programs that are as long as we can get to get the clinical skills. My refresher course teacher , who is a NP, told me that when she graduated from a top university with a BSN, she had never given an IM injection. That was in the 80's. That is why I am interested in how the clinicals were learned so well in those diploma schools of years ago. Personally, I wish I had went to one, followed by getting a BSN and then an MS in a specialty area. Many of our greatest theorists did it that way. I am sorry to be off topic, but I just wanted to explain why I am looking for a book on the old nursing aschools. Also, I think nursing history is important, and I find it so interesting. Any recomendations? Krisssy

There is one about Frontier Nursing, Mary Breckinridge's story of nursing in eastern Kentucky but I can't remember the name of it??? It is really good though, I recommend it.

Gerald Grob is a name to check out among healthcare history authors. For those of us who like psych, Grob's The Mad Among Us did particularly well.

Short History of Nursing From the Earliest Times to the Present Day (Hardcover)
by Lavinia L[loyd] (1858-1956) Dock
This is very readable.
She was WAY ahead of her time. She worked for womens sufferage and warned against male dominence of the nursing profession by medicine and hospital administration.
We should have heeded her warnings.
http://www.amazon.com/Short-History-...4155885&sr=1-5
The 1931 version is shorter and less expensive. Still very good: http://www.amazon.com/Short-History-...4155885&sr=1-7
Or try a library.

Hi,
My very favourite nurse author is Evelyn Prentis who trained in England in 1937. Her five books describe her training, her work during WWII, her work post WWII and then she worked in aged care. Her books are just so very, very funny. I highly recommend them. You can generally find copies on http://www.abebooks.co.uk/
