Have any of you watched the new 'Private Practice'--a spinoff from Grey's Anatomy? I love Grey's and have been really enjoying Private Practice, but am annoyed by Addison's ignorance about midwives. At one point in the pilot, Addison (supposedly a neonatal surgeon and OB/GYN) is approached by the office assistant (who we learned earlier in the show is studying to be some type of midwife) and asked if he can help her with a delivery to practice his "midwifery" skills. She blows him off and responds with, "is midwifery even a word?"

I haven't seen it, but not too surprising. There was an episode where one of the other doctors was having a baby and she didn't want an epidural. That doctor acted like it wasn't even possible to give birth without one. Not to mention the way the residents and nurses are portrayed on that show. Nurses are pretty much errand runners while the residents stay with the patients all the time and do everything. I'd like to see that in real life

I watched my first episode of this show last night, curteousy of my boyfriend and at first, it seemed to ramble a little, but as I saw more character develop, it was quite interesting.

I would have never guessed the receptionist was studying to become a midwife, he didn't seemed focused at all.

I've been watching it and I enjoy it. I watch it more for the actors/actresses on it than for anything else. I think it is a great cast and I'm super happy to see Amy Brenneman (?). I used to love to watch "Judging Amy."

There were about 67876 things in that pilot that really p'd me off. I can't even remember most of them, but Addison's attitude toward birth is really disappointing overall.

At first I thought it was cool that there was a character studying to become a midwife, but now I'm kind of scared about how they are going to be portrayed. In the episode, Pete (who I believe is an osteopathic MD... anybody know for sure?) anesthetizes a woman during an emergency cesarean using ACUPUNCTURE ONLY!! Later, Dell (midwife-to-be) says he told his class about it, and his teacher called Pete a "primal life-giver." It just sounded SOOO hokey, and I'm even the kind of person who could survive on water and Ina May's Spiritual Midwifery alone.
