I was turned down for Medicaid because I made $150 above poverty level one month so I've been trying to find a midwife. So far, the cheapest I have found is one who will deliver for $2000 but I still can't afford that.

It looks like I might be having to deliver at home by myself. Thing is, I wonder if anyone knows the process of registering a birth certificate and applying for a social security card?

Go to http://www.mothering.com/discussions

go to Tribal areas (area where you live), click onto your area and ask for recommendations for your area. Check out the Homebirth subforum.
Also at that same site, there is a subforum for birth professionals, ask there too.
You should be able to get any and all questions answered at the mothering.com forums. They will know, too, about the ss# and birth certificate issues.

You could also try the forums at Midwiferytoday.com looking for a midwife.

I was also going to suggest going to mothering.com, but someone beat me to it! I read some of your posts, I think you would really enjoy the forum. I am a member there also. They also have a forum about unassisted childbirth if you chose to do that. You can find out all of the supplies you would need.

I hope this isn't too late to help you, but it's easy to get the birth certificate and ssn. I had my son at home last March and the certificate the mw filled out was enough. I think you can just get a notarized letter if you don't have an attendant. It all depends on the state, of course...
