Home Birth

Hi-

I was wondering if anyone knew the legality issues of having a CNM attend a home birth. Do CNM's attend home births? I am specifically interested in the laws in New YOrk.

Thanks!
Kristen

Re: Home Birth

Yes, CNM's attend homebirths in many states - the laws regarding home births and what types of practitioners attend home births vary from state to state. I believe (not living there) that New York is one state where there are CNMs actively doing home births. New York is also one of the states where CMs (non-nurses who have had the same education and passed the same boards as CNMs) are legally allowed to practice.

The American College of Nurse Midwives has a position statement on home birth- I can't find it at the moment, but you can find it at www.acnm.org
