Smile Graduate Entry Nurse Midwives

Hi All,

This summer I am starting a grad entry CNM program! I am hoping to hear from those who have completed CNM School via the graduate entry route. Because of the lack of L/D work prior to the program, I am curious about your experiences. Did you feel prepared for practice after graduation? Was it difficult to find a position/work after graduation? Do think that L/D exposure before CNM School would have changed you as a midwife?

Thanks for sharing!

I'm considering entering a grad entry program myself, so I'm very interested in the experiences of those who have completed similar programs!

Re: Graduate Entry Nurse Midwives

I"m in my program now, I have two more semesters until N-CLEX. I plan to work in L & D as a nurse until I feel comfortable to work as a CNM. I will probably work full time on my Master's, but work as much as possible while I am doing it. After I finish my degree I will continue working as an RN until I am ready. I think that experience is so important- intuition you can only get from knowing the job well.

Thanks CEG for a sharing! Have you found that your fellow classmates a year or two a head of you are planning to do the same thing? (Work as a RN first)

Re: Graduate Entry Nurse Midwives

I'm at a pretty new program-only the second year. Last year's students are all planning on working, but at my program working is required- you have to have at least a year's experience to graduate. That's the same minimum that's required to apply for the traditional Master's so I think they are trying to keep the level of experience equal.

One of the issues with not working I have heard of is finding a CNM job post-Master's. I have heard from a few people that this has been a problem but I am not sure how common it is.

Good luck!
