grad school w/ lil ones

Hi,
I am about to graduate & start off on a pp floor this summer. I will transfer to L&D after a yr. I REALLY want to go to grad school w/in a few yrs to become a nurse-midwife. However, my husband & i also want kids soon. So, my question is what were your experiences of going through midwifery school w/ little kids? Did you do it full time, pt? Would you recommend it or waiting til they go to school? Also, what about the financial aspect (daycare, only 1 income from spouse etc....) Thanks!!!

Re: grad school w/ lil ones

I can't speak from experience but I have two little ones, 1 and almost 4. I plan on doing an online program and going part time. I am in no hurry so I am not sure when I will start. About the financial part, I am saving for school now so that won't be such a burden later. We are lucky that we are in position that my husbands income is enough if we are really good with our spending.

Re: grad school w/ lil ones

Hi Crazy. I hear you! I've had a dream of becoming a CNM for 11 years and some days feel like it may never happen. The kids issue is a big one because you want to be able to give 100% to your family and 100% to your vocation and you're only human! I have a 2 YO and another on the way, plus I am the breadwinner as well. I think I have come to peace with waiting a few more years until they are in school and I have some $ saved to go back to school. At times it's sooo hard to wait, but the fire just doesn't go out. And it won't for you either. Lucky you that you'll be getting great experience in PP and L&D. I think you'll just know when the timing is right to go back. Meanwhile enjoy the journey. Remember, your working life is long. The average career span for a MW delivering babies is 10-15 years cuz of the burnout factor. BTW- in response to your post on sleep deprivation- once you have your babies, you'll have a whole new perspective on sleep Hope that helps.

Re: grad school w/ lil ones

thanks for your responses!!
lol, i love the comment on sleep deprivation & kids
i'm definitely a product of my society & want all my dreams now. I know when i have kids i'll reassess if the timing is right. i've been in L&D all semester for my leadership clinical. i love being an l&d nurse but when i see the midwives in action i'm captivated!

completely off topic----my friend & i went to the campus bkstore to order our caps & gowns today. before we left, the lady that was helping us thanked us for growing up to be nurse that was so sweet of her!

Well, it can be done slowly with kids by not easily. You study when you can, your house is always a wreck, your spouse gets jealous, but it turns out in the long run. I have a 4 and 6 year old. I wish I had started before I had kids!! I would be finished by now. You will have days you want to pull your hair out with kids... Hindsite is 20/20 I am half way through the program now.. but if I had it to do all over again, I would do it before I had kids. I am also working full time too...
