Wondering if I should continue

I work casual as a Hospice Aide. I work one shift a month. Today was my scheduled Hospice day.

Everything got off to a wrong start today. My alarm didn't go off. The check engine light went on in the car, and I was late. I called in explaining my alarm didn't go off, but I would be there by 8:45.

Got to the office, and the Director hauled me into her office. She told me she "didn't know" I was working today, so she didn't schedule me. I told her I called in a month ago and gave my schedule to the office manager. Then she started with the when are you going to work full time issue. I told her July, as this will give me the time to go on vacation in June and see if the hospital is keeping me on. I like the hospital most days.

Director then told me not to come back till I was willing to commit to full time.

I get the feeling she is trying to run me out and really doesn't want me working for them. Or am I as usual, reading things into this? I'm really not sure if I want to work full time for them after this.

If there was ever a "see you later", that's it.

I wouldn't want to work for this agency a minute longer than I had to, not with the DON treating me like a Kleenex.

The handwriting, as they say, is on the wall. Time to look elsewhere for part-time work, IMHO.

I have to agree - time to move on. Good luck. Only one shift a month probably isn't worth it to you either.

Well, she sounds like a gem. I would certainly look for another hospice job, or stay where you are at.
Good Luck

Re: Wondering if I should continue

I've decided I'm not going back to them. I did receive a phone call the other day from the Inpatient Hospice unit at the nursing home I did my first clinical rotation. They need volunteers, so I'm going to volunteer.

I still love the idea of hospice, but I don't think this company that I was working casual for was a good fit for me.

That is wonderful that you are going to volunteer at the inpatient unit. What better way to get your foot in the door!! Your putting yourself in a good position to get hired on as an aide down the road, if an opening comes up! Good Luck to you!

Re: Wondering if I should continue

There are many managers that seem to be like that. It just depends on what you can put up with. I think you did the right thing because if this is what happens to you when you work 1 day a month, I'd hate to see how they would treat you working full time. Good luck

Re: Wondering if I should continue

It just really hit me out of left field. Everyone told me how wonderful this place was to work for, and how well they treat their employees. Maybe she's just mad at me because I had to finish my contract at the hospital (it's up on Thursday) and I couldn't commit to full time until then, but I was told that they would love to put me on casual.

Thing is, while I was working out my contract at the hospital, I wanted to leave because there were a few incidents with nurses that weren't very good. I pretty much felt like they were trying to get me so mad and/or frustrated that I would quit. I rode that storm out, and I actually liked working at the hospital and I want to stay there. Hospice pays better, but I don't have the wear & tear on my car that I would have driving to Hospice patient's homes.

I also don't know if I could actually do hospice full time. I get emotionally attached. I love the concept. Maybe I just need to find another hospice place before I make up my mind about full time work. That's another reason why I want to volunteer somewhere first.
