Mandi, I'll bet that what you are saying doesn't come out stupid at all. It just seems that way to you because you are uncomfortable. There are no special magic words. Just a hug or a pat on the arm if they welcome touch and "I'm sorry" is all that is needed. If there is some way in which the patient touched your heart...a beautiful smile, the way they always greeted you, a special dignity they had...you can share it with the family and let them know you will always remember them too.
