Re: March 17, 2007 CHPN exam

Congratulations to all of you! It reminds me I have to get cracking on getting stuff together for my alternative recertification. I need to submit at the end of this year.

The certification has to be renewed every four years. You can take the exam again, or you can recertify "by portfolio," which means that you do certain things like mentor, publish, present, etc., and you keep track of that documentation. Then when it is time to recertify, you submit that instead of taking the exam.

I believe the best way is a combination of work in hospice and palliative care, plus studying using the core curriculum study guide that HPNA puts out.

www.hpna.org should get you all the info you need! Good luck.....

Re: March 17, 2007 CHPN exam

I am sitting for the exam in September. Do you recommend the HPNA Core Curriculum text over the Textbook of Palliative Care Nursing by Ferrell and Coyle? Please advise on other texts or readings you CHPN's out there found valuable for test prep.

I did not use Ferrell and Coyle, so I don't have a basis for comparison. I did use the core curriculum, and basically I just googled everything I didn't "get," plus I did the practice tests in the back and looked up everything I didn't know for a fact from those topics as well.

Good luck!
