As a student I just couldn't bring myself to spend the kind of money the gym's wanted so I just do basic stretching every morning and every evening before going to bed. 3-4 days a week I do about 1 hours worth of work on the fitness ball. I also walk to school (45 mins. with books

each way) every day I have class and run on days I don't walk to school.
That combined with a pretty well balanced diet (I do enjoy my ice cream on these hot summer nights) seems to work really well for me. The stretching also helps to relieve any stress that has built up while sleeping or during the day so I'm usually pretty loose and relaxed.
To ease your mind, i'm all about the same things. I started running for ease, found a friend with whom i did a 4 hour bike ride today, snowboard, walk 20 minutes to work nearly every day, swim in friend's pools, hike around city and woods, do push ups and "self-resistance" training. Self actually had some good home exercise routines as part of their get in shape for summer issues.
You don't need a gym. Some people find it to be a motivator, which is cool. i thought about getting a short term personal trainer to get some suggestions for home work-outs to get rid of trouble areas, but you don't need a gym for that anymore either.
They are very pricey without discounts, and complicated. You have to drive or walk there, get changed, go work out, figure out what you want to do with all those pieces of equipment....
The only one i would join would be one with at least a meter pool =)
