Re: The Vegetarian Thread

Last week I emailed like 50% of the staff I work with a video from PETA called 'Meet Your Meat.' At least half through away all their meat.

Four husbands called me complaining that they are now vegetarian because of me.

LOL Give a girl a chance Tea is evening meal although can be a drink Pie is something with pastry either surrounding or top. I just mixed ground mince (see not english ) onion and mushrooms together and gently cook in a little oil then add a small amount of gravy to hold it together and add a pastry top. Brown off in the oven whilst pots and veg cook. Can season to taste but to hubby's disgust I don't cook with salt just pepper so he tends to put loads on afterwards

Sounds good. I think the Carribean people's have similar food.

I hope I don't sound like I'm picking on you, because I am learning here. Ground mince is ground beef and "tea" is dinner/supper. LOL

So what does " Brown off in the oven whilst pots and veg cook." mean?? "Brown off" means to "bake"?? What are "pots"? Bare with me, I'll get the lingo down soon enough.

I don't think you are picking on me, I am sat here chuckling to myself as it just goes to show how different the world can be.

Brown off is usually a gently cook on the top of the stove in a pan to start the cooking. If using real meat it is a way to start the cooking process so takes less time in the oven, I out of habit still do it as it cooks the onions. Pots is just a short word for potatoes.

LOL Silverdragon, I can understand you better than I can understand everyone else. Half of the terms the americans use seem to be in another language to me

LOL........I'm getting it now. "Brown off" sounds like "sautee", although I have heard the expression "brown the meat".

Re: The Vegetarian Thread

I am not a vagan, but in the past years I have refined my choices of meat. I have looked around and read most of what has be put out there, and I find myself making better choices. More tufu, less red meat. More veggies and fish. But I begin to wonder where we draw the line? If all life is sacred, then.....are not the plants we eat also alive?

Alive as in being a breathing (so to speak), growing thing, yes. Alive as in having a heart and a brain, no. Alive as in suffering pain, no.

That's what I was going to say. Plants do not have the capacity to suffer and feel pain without a nervous system.

It is nearly impossible to lead a 100% cruelty free life in our society today. Sometimes field mice are killed in the harvest of grain. The leather free shoes I use may have glue that comes from an animal. The tired in my car have animal products in them. On and on and on. I think if animal concerns are why we make the choices we make, the best we can do is move in that direction.
