Re: The Vegetarian Thread

Confession: My coworkers through me a surprise birthday party, not knowing I had returned to an aspiring vegetarian. So I ate the food. It was a bit awkward because that morning we were talking about lunch and what I was going to eat and I was telling them about my vegan sloppy joes and how I was not eating meat. Then turn the corner to the "buffet of death"....sigh........

It was good.

Memorial day at my sisters they cooked ribs and hot links (sausages) on the BBQ.
I had corn, collard greens, black eyed peas, and macaroni & cheese.
And a piece of cake.
I generally try to stay away from cheese and sugar, but too often eat them when tempted.

Re: The Vegetarian Thread

Hi everybody!
I've been a vegetarian since the 2nd semester of my freshman year in college (about the beginning of '04). I kind of stopped eating meat due to a combination of health reasons and because I just did not like the thought of eating meat.

Since then I have eaten some meat here and there. I went through a time when I craved meat (I was on a medication that caused me to become anemic, so maybe it was my body's way of telling me I needed iron), but other than that, I do not miss meat.

Currently I would consider myself a lacto-vegetarian, since I do eat dairy yogurt and cream cheese (both fat-free). I tried soy yogurt before and did not like it. When I say I do not eat meat, that includes red meat, poultry, and seafood.

I love being a vegetarian! I am happy to see that grocery stores are providing more choices for vegetarians, people with food limitations, and health-conscious individuals in general.

Re: The Vegetarian Thread

I love the Moosewood cookbooks...has anyone else used them? I bought the original Moosewood and the Enchanted Broccoli Forest (isn't that an amazing name - makes you wish it was real!) a year ago. I'm hoping to be able to make it to the original restaurant in Ithaca, New York sometime before I croak!

One of my former roomates made a Curried Peanut Butter soup from Moosewood...it was divine!!

One of the simplest, but most delicious ways I eat tofu is to slice it into cubes and drizzle a little bit of sesame oil and soya sauce on it...mmmm...add some brown rice and steamed dark leafy greens and you have yourself a nutritious and tasty meal.

Hi Iris. Soy yogurt is an acquired taste. Some of the cultures are dairy based so not all soy yogurt is vegan anyway. I agree that no meat means no seafood, poultry and red meat. It's interesting that some people say "I don't eat meat" and then chomp down on chicken. I remember a while back in a Spanish restaurant I asked if they could make the pallea (sp?) vegetarian and he came out with it loaded with all kinds of shrimp, scallaps, muscles, etc. and I nearly gagged because I hate that stuff.

I've had the cookbook "Sunday's at Moosewood Restaurant" for over a decade. I'm need to dust it off and take a look at it again.

I've done the soy sauce and sesame oil/tofu dish before myself. It's a great combination. I've actually been known to open up a box of the Japanese-style boxed tofu and sprinkle soy sauce, chili pepper sauce and sesame oil and eat it cold. (Living alone you do such things. LOL)

Ooooo.....I never thought of adding chili's to the tofu, that's a great idea! I love spice...And I know what you mean about just eating things cold...sometimes I open a can of flavoured gluten and eat it straight with chopsticks...Mmmmm.....

I like to keep a stash of dried apricots (I hear they're a good source of iron) and nuts (protein) to crunch on when my tummy rumbles. Nuts are good to add to a stir fry too if you're looking for a little extra protein.
