Re: Healthier Living Thread Part V

BBF, it's tough accepting just 1-2 lbs a week when the first few weeks are usually a lot larger, but studies seem to indicate that's the best way to keep it off. Massive quick weight loss isn't sustained (but for those with surgical interventions), so slow and steady is best.

Thanks for the pointer, Tweety. You're right- a steady course is working. Well that, and being mindful of what I eat. I took the kids trick-or-treating the other evening, and I haven't even wanted their candy. I lost another pound this weekend. That puts me at the 10 lb mark. It's a milestone-Yay!

I agree with Tweety, lots of pounds is great at first but a steady lose of 1-2 pounds a week helps you to try and tone up and not end up with yards of loose skin!!I've lost 29 pounds now and am slowing down to a pound a week, sometimes a pound every two weeks. As long as it keeps going down it's fine.BTW if you lose 2 pounds a week for a year you will lose 7 stone (98 lbs)!!

Absolutely!

I set a reward system up for myself - for every 5 lb, an outfit, or present. Nothing huge, just something to strive for (then when I reach and maintain my goal I will have to continue to reward myself heh heh)

Re: Healthier Living Thread Part V

Uh-oh. I'm behind again. Good grief! LOL! Sorry guys, my 2 1/2 year old daughter broke her leg playing at her grandma's recently (she was running across the carpet and fell - scary that that broke her leg) and was put in a spica cast, so I've been off taking care of her and don't have a computer at home. I finally chilled out enough to let the sitter take care of her, but that was hard. I had to come back though, she will be in the cast for 6 weeks at least, so I couldn't stay home with her the whole time.

Anyway, I have been bad since I've been off and think I've gained a little based on how my jeans were fitting today, but that's enough of that, I'm back on track as of today and I did a good, fast walk again last night.

Now I have to run - have a med/surg test tonight and must go study . . . have a great day today everybody!

Ouch - sorry about your daughter. My daughter broke her arm when she was 18 months old by tipping forward on one of those little plastic slides. Weird.

Haven't been on this manifestation of the "Healthy Living" thread. Sounds like y'all are doing well.

For some reason - I don't have any idea why - I've been focused on getting rid of this middle-aged abdomen and the rub-together thighs. I'm doing Atkins again - doing well, haven't had any cravings for carbs (and my daughter, that brat, bought DORITOS last weekend when she had friends over and the bag just stood there, staring me down and daring me to eat some . . . . I won, with no effort - that is truly weird).

I've been working out - at the gym, biking, walking, etc. Fortunately the weather lately has cooperated and it is sunny and gets about 80 degrees during the day. I also spend time chopping wood because we are using our wood burning furnace at night (30 degrees).

I've lost 8 pounds. Of course it is the same 8 I always lose with Atkins so I'm skeptical. I always gain back when I go off Atkins.

If only chips and salsa didn't taste so good.

I am sorry to hear about your daughter. Good luck with your test.

Congrats on the 8 pounds. I've done Atkins three times and each time I ended up getting physically sick, but I did lose weight. I can see how it would work if you follow the program right, but I love fruits and veggies. Anyway, I wish you lots of luck!

Re: Healthier Living Thread Part V

Thanks guys!!!

Steph, sounds great on the Atkins, let us know if you lose more and how it goes. I've been debating on getting back on that one as well, but so far have not summed up the willpower yet. I need to get back on that track though.

Re: Healthier Living Thread Part V

As to Atkins and carbs . . . I love veggies more than fruit so I'm good with that on Atkins.

I'll be interested to see if my cholesterol goes down -

Atkins has never made me sick - I always feel more energetic and not lethargic. Eating lots of bad carbs makes me feel lethargic . . . . the temptation to buy a bag of spicy Doritos or a can of Pringles and eat the whole thing has always been hard for me to resist . . . especially in regards to stress eating. It feels and tastes good to do it but you feel just awful after. Tired, run down, bad.

Atkins gives me energy. SouthBeach too. I do really think there is something to the bad carb/good carb thing.

I did work out - I did the elliptical machine for 45 minutes, HR 140-150, and read People Magazine. Did 20 minutes of weights. Now I have to wash my car before walking up to get my son from Kindergarten.

I've begun to think it is the sunny days that are inspiring me . . .we've had cold, gray and rainy days for weeks here.

I think there is something to the good/bad carb thing, too. I don't know what my problem was. The first time I did Atkins, I lost 28 lbs in 3 weeks then got sick (emesis). The last two times I tried Atkins I got sick by the 3rd day, both times! I believe Atkins does work, but I'm not sure it's how I want to eat. I just watch portions and calorie intake while spending at least an hour on the treadmill at least 5 times a week. If I want to eat out at a restaurant, I can just spend an extra hour on the treadmill BEFORE I go out and then go and enjoy myself without the guilt because I already "covered" the extra calories. Of course, I do not go crazy because I realize how hard that extra hour is and that I would MUCH rather lose weight than overindulge!
