Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!

Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....

Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!

QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?
I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....

Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????

Wow! Thanx for the warm welcome. Whoever doesn't know, my dh and I started Seattle Sutton after we each gained 50 pounds since moving back to Chicago. It's only been 10 days but I truly feel so much better physically and emotionally.
Not much of a recipie but I keep a big fruit salad in the fridge for when we get the munchies. I put everything from melons to kiwi and everything in between. My 2 year old loves it and it's so easy.

I am always in charge of the cooking for every holiday and get together which I love, but I always just try to cut little corners with the things we all love to eat. I use skim milk and low fat cheese and I can't believe it's not butter in all of my cooking. Then for the desserts I use low fat creamcheese and mix the sugar with the splenda and all of that so then you can cut a few calories here and there and I just don't tell anyone 90% of the time they can't tell the difference. It still all tastes good.

Really...........post recipies! I was always under the impression you couldn't bake with anything but the real thing or your sweets would be a flop. I always make loads of cookies for everyone around Christmas. It's our little tradition to drop them all off but I don't want the temptation this year. We were gonna skip it.

Misscheli, welcome to the thread. From now on put those 50 lbs on the back burner and focus on "healthier living". Here we have learned to motivate each other to do just that.

Nothing feels better when you can share and relate with other people. We are all in the same boat here and together we can stay afloat.

If you stop and count every little calorie and gram of fat you cut down by substituting the low fat versions you'd be amazed right? With herbs/spices/seasonings you can really enjoy a delicious mean without the unecessary fat too.

Thanks for sharing!

I am a huge fan of soup. So, I you will constantly find me in the "day old section" of my local grocery store shopping for veggies. They are in absolute great shape, just not the best looking veggies, but for the price.................who cares right?

To answer your QOD Deb:

Besides, after chopping away no one can tell!

I chop a few potatoes, carrots, onion, celery, squash, asparagus, cabbage, sprouts, peas, green beans, etc and separate them into cooking categories. The ones that take longer to cook in one bowl and the fast cookers in the other.

I wash them throughly, boil some water with a tid bit of olive oil, throw some bullion cubes in there, chopped parley, garlic, cilantro, basil, and whatever else I find and bring it to a boil. Next, I add the longer to cook veggies, a few minutes the fast cookers and voilą!

You can chop chicken breast or whatever you want of course but it's a must in my fridge. Whenever I have an "urge" to munch away I warm me a bowl of this. Beats canned veggies, and less healthier snacks

Yes we are . . . .this is just a new thread and you have to give us time to catch up.

I was inundated with calls while on the treadmill - finally just said no at 2 miles so I didn't make 3. Pumped a little iron though and did 100 situps.

The calls were my son and husband. I have to answer the phone since I'm on call for OB. Son was upset - had to take a day off from work and lose $200 because his bank wouldn't mail his new ATM card (he lost the previous one). Identity theft precaution or something - anyway, he was hot . . . I had to calm him down - he is also mad about the slow car repair - he blew an engine in Sept and his car is still not fixed.

Soup sounds good for lunch. I do alot of soups too. I'll have to think a bit for a recipe.
