Thinking of nursing but in holistic way,

I am thinking of becoming an RN but I am more into nutrition and holistic healing. It would it be hard for me to fit in a hospital setting working as an RN who has a holistic point of view?

Re: Thinking of nursing but in holistic way,

Nurses are educated to be holistic health care providers. We learn about mental health, spiritual health, physical health etc

Studying the wcience behine the Interventions and Treatments gives another dimension to the Healing Process. Holism is easily incorporated in all areas of Nursing. To me it should always be reviewed and utilized in all aspects of Health Care.

In all honesty, and in my experience, in the hospital setting it's all you can do to get the basics done. We're now providing "Chevy" care vs. "Mercedes" care. In order to really practice probably in the way you want, you'd have to be outside most hospitals.

Re: Thinking of nursing but in holistic way,

I so agree with you guys, especially Zenman. In the hsopitals where I've worked, its all the nurse can do to get the basic care done. I haven't been able to use holistic nursing in many years due to the demands to continually do more with less.

Re: Thinking of nursing but in holistic way,

I have wanted to combine the two (hospital nursing and holistic care) for many years. There are some small things you can incorporate such as massage and forms of meditation to promote healing. Ultimately your are bound by time limits, policies and procedures also liability issues in some cases. The BEST way to practice holistic nursing unfortunately is outside of the hospital. I have decided to start my own business in order to practice more holistic care, but I still will keep my "day" job as well. Also there are many clinics that promote holistic and complementary health.

Re: Thinking of nursing but in holistic way,

check out Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in La Jolla, CA. They have it going on! Rauni King, RN, CHTP/I & Dr Mimi Guarneri have placed this in their priority to give patients holistic care with the best allopathic care.
I practice holism as I can. I was practicing in CCU more than in the ER where I was the primary caregiver for 12+ hours. I could give that emotional support, connect to the spirit of that patient & family member. I am in PACU now & it's a challenge when the goal is to wake them up & get them to a comfortable room in a timely manner. The patient may not remember my name but you can bet I layed my hands on them & spoke a kind word of encouragement intpheir ear. I have my part time private practice in Massage Therapy, Healing Touch & education. This is where I can really take the time to do holistic care. I can talk about diet, exercise, relaxation response, skin care,etc...during their time (1 or more hours) with me. I get as much out of this as the clients.
