I'm very interested in Reiki and was wondering if anyone knows/does Reiki either in their personal life or in their nursing career.

Our state board of nursing approves CEUs for a "Reiki Seminar for Health Professionals" taught by a certain Holistic College whose instructors meet some very rigorous standards. I am excited to be able to "learn" Reiki while chalking up CEUs at the same time. I'd love to be able to use Reiki in concert with patient care in some way.

Any information would be appreciated.

Sorry I can't help w/your question. Could you please tell me what Reiki is? If you want to use it in your practice, it sounds like an interesting subject.

Hello. I just took a reiki class as part of my masters program in holistic nutrition-was an elective. I am also interested. I have a friend who is a reiki master.

I'm very happy to know you are interested in learning a bit about Reiki. I'll do my best, as a complete novice, to share what I've learned so far... Reiki is considered a "Complementary" healing activity meaning it is used in concert with traditional medical care rather than an "Alternative" healing activity which mostly means it is used instead of traditional medical care. You can use a search engine and type in "Reiki" or look for books on the subject in your local public library or bookstore.

In a bit of a nutshell, let me quote from the book "Reiki Fire" written by Frank Arjava Petter:

"Anyone can become a Reiki channel in a matter of a day or two. No skill and no special preparations or degrees are necessary. It is our birthright. Once initiated into Reiki, a person remains a Reiki channel throughtout his or her lifetime, even if it isn't put to use. Of course, daily practice deepens understanding of the universal life force and also helps become a clear channel for it. There is no philosophy or religion attached to it, it is pure energy! Reiki treatment is safe in any situation irrespective of disease or discomfort, but it is no substitute for professional medical care. Reiki can be easily combined with orthodox medicine, as well as with alternative healing or relaxation methods. It is about time that orthodox and alternative healing methods work hand-in-hand instead of competing."

From my reading books about Reiki, I'm understanding that Reiki is the Universal Life Energy that flows through everything on our planet. Everything is made of energy. Becoming attuned to Reiki allows us to grow within ourselves and to help others too. The Reiki energy only goes where it is needed and the person channeling it does not do anything to aid it other than to ask the energy to flow. As Mr. Petter states, "...the energy is transferred or made available to the student by initiation, not by years of long practice."

I am Christian and feel no conflict about Reiki. I like to think of the "Universal Life Energy" (which is what Reiki translates as... it's a Japanese word) as being God's Love flowing through us all.

There are 5 Principles of Reiki written by Dr. Mikao Usui (8/15/1865-3/9/1926):

1. Don't get angry today
2. Don't worry today
3. Be grateful today
4. Work hard today (meditative (prayer) practice)
5. Be kind to others today

I hope my post here as been of some aid to you. I'm not qualified to speak on the subject as a person who has been attuned is able to do. I'm very excited about my upcoming seminar though!!

I strongly suggest you search more about the subject of Reiki to learn more. It's absolutely fascinating!!!

I got into a deep discussion with my hubby who is also an RN and he really thinks it is a buncy of malarky.....................I am considering taking another class that would be "hands on" LOL sorry I could not resist....................

Thanks for the mini lesson. I love those five principles and wrote them down! I think it is a good sign that your Board recognizes Reiki for CEU. If you want to use it with your practice I would take the matter of fact approach and be low key. Give people a chance to accept or refuse without pressure. You can talk about concepts without putting a name to it at first. That gives people a chance to hear the message without being immediately "put off" by the thought of something new.

Also (this probably doesn't apply to you yet) I have found that persons in practice (such as a NP affialiated with a medical group) will place info about specific offerings in their info brochure (ex: a NP specializes in pain mgt techniques, special preop pain mgt session offered as part of pkg and written up as such in info).

I will be looking into this further and wish you luck in being able to incorporate Reiki into your nursing practice. Oh, and BTW, this sounds so much like other "accepted" philosophies. There should really be no problem! Have a great day.

Any RN's out there doing Healing Touch?

To make a long story short, I've been doing energetic healing for about 25 years. I'm a Reiki Master and Certified Healing Touch Practitioner, along with being a Holistic Nurse - Certified. As an NP, I know that any time I touch a client the energy is moving and seeking to bring the highest good to the client.

I use specific techniques to ground clients, ease the pain of minor office procedures, teach stress management, and empowerment. I'm also studying cranio sacral work and have begun integrating that into our practice as well. Certainly, in this managed care environment, it is difficult to do a full treatment of any modality, but I find that I can get in an element or two with most encounters.
