Hopelessness continues to be an ongoing factor in Indian physical health disparities

Rates of diabetes, obesity and smoking remain consistent across income levels among American Indians living in urban areas, according to a study released Wednesday by the Urban Indian Health Institute, the AP/Contra Costa Times reports.

"This is at odds with rates among other racial groups, which usually decline as income increases", said Maile Taualii (scientific director at the Institute).

"When Indian folks drink, it appears to have nothing to do with how much money they have, and that's not true for any other racial group," adding, "There seems to be a sense of hopelessness, a sense that diabetes, alcoholism and other health problems are inevitable in the community."

By addressing the multigenerational learned hopelessness, empowering them as a people, without taking away their heritage, culture, or dignity.
