Re: Crime Statistics

The reason why this is all so important is, when you come to a new country or area... you are in unfamilar territory. The que's or little things you notice about protecting your self lets say in Manila are different in the USA. So you could think your safe when in fact you are in an area that looks good but is very dangerous. When I first moved to the USA from Canada I moved to an area that looked clean and nice. It was close to my office. Once my children started at school, I found out about the gangs... they even have gun shops set up in the garages of some of the homes in that area. This was in San Diego, California. Young people have been shot just driving down the road at 5 pm in the "daylight" . He was a straight A student and not involved with gangs.. I moved to a better neighborhood and then had my neighbor shot in the back right below my childrens bedroom window... that neighborhood was Scripps Ranch (San Diego) the neighbor had provoked the gang members and they followed him home and the rest is history... he is now in a wheelchair. I moved away from there to.
Just check and check again. Even when you get to the USA and you want to rent an apartment, call the local police department and ask to speak to someone (community officer) and ask if they have many issues with that complex... it is worth spending sometime and doing "homework"
Always be aware of your surroundings!!!!

Re: Crime Statistics

and don't forget if there are sex offenders in your chosen areas..you can go to the police station and they may have computer databases that tracks down registered sex offenders in your neighborhood. this is important for those who have children, or women. We Filipinos are used to purse snatchers, hold uppers, etc..but once your in the U.S., you will see different groups of dangerous criminals. You have to be very careful when your inside your home, or when your outdoors. criminals here are more aggressive. we can't emphasize enough how dangerous they are..here, you need to be more vigilant of your environment, and you have to be assertive..either you cannot be too nice, or rude to people. we are so friendly back home, but here, if you give those people the wrong look? you get smack in the face.

Yeah! Whenever I'm in my bro's house, he doesn't like it when I'm in the window looking at the neighborhood. He says that the neighbors would think I'm snooping.

Bus stations also are notorious for vagrants asking for a quarter (and most of them are overweight!).

Re: Crime Statistics

Toronto has its good areas, as well as bad areas. You need to do a search yourself for any city that you are considering. You need to do the homework, we don't do it for you.

I may suggest Texas to anyone from PI looking where to work.

Low Cost of Living, Houses are cheap to buy compared to rest of USA. Warm weather most of the time.

I noticed Texas and most Texas cities were low on the crime list in 2005.

This should continue to improve, since in September 2007, Texas passed a law that is Legal to carry a concealed Handgun in your Vehicle, Place of Employement, and Home with no licenses needed.

Re: Crime Statistics

Makes it quite safe when people can carry licenses without them being registered all over. Just what we need.

And sorry, but it does not make it safer.

Suggest that you read more recent crime statistics. And Texas does not have anything close to ratio laws and you can have over 15 patients on a med-surg unit that you are 100% fully legal to cover for with your license at stake.

And it is not warm and sunny all year round there, just had snow in Dallas the other day. Think that you should check out more statistics about that state. Including floods and tornados, and hurricanes.

Re: Crime Statistics

It is also a moot point as to where someone is considering now as there is a wait of five years for a visa. Things should change, either better or significantly worse.

There are no visas available now and the H1-C is due to expire in 2010, and we do not expect it to be renewed.
