Any opinions welcome on:

- Which Deveice seems to be most in use today in some facilities.
- Would it benefit a Nurse to Own their own device if required by the job, or would hospital provide a device.
- Would hospital reimburse nurse whom used their own device for the job if required.

Depends on the nurse or facility plus costs. I know I would prefer to own my own as I use it for stuff as well as nursing

palm. plentiful programs, cheap and adequate device. I had a windows mobile device, it was slower to get to what I needed for references. I wouldn't want to use it in a clinical setting. just my 0.02

What version of Windows was your device running? How did it compare to the Palm in terms of processor and RAM? The new iPaq's look to have a processor twice as fast as the Palm; I'm wondering how much that might impact the performance of the programs? As far as running programs on a PDA, I have no idea whether amount of RAM, speed of ram, or speed of processor, or OS has the most impact.

I'm leaning towards the ipaq 110, but am not completely sold. The 110 weighs under 4oz and still manages a 3.5" screen. The ipaq 210 looks great on paper, but is comparatively enormous. The Palm TX is between the two iPaqs in terms of weight, dimensions, etc., but with a slower processor.

The fact that most local stores don't carry any of these models is far less helpful to my "hands-on, wanna touch it" shopping. This weekend I'm planning a visit to a semi-nearby store that claims to carry the Palm TX (for me to fondle). I still haven't found anyone around that carries the iPaqs; the 110 is half an inch longer, but otherwise quite similar to the HTC Touch, so that's my most readily available benchmark.

As far as applications, the ones I've seen mentioned as "must haves" are available for Palm, Windows, or Windows Mobile, and (surprisingly often) other platforms, such as BlackBerry, iPhone, and Symbian.

the issue I found was the powering up of the OS for windows with the loading of the OS, the sounds and screen splashes/animations and whatnot made the device slow, regardless of the processor, that couple hundred extra GHZ got ate up that I seem to recall. I found it cumbersome as compared to press the button and "instant on to where you left it" of the palm. and you are absolutely right, the other platforms have caught up to palm in software, as I am noticing on skyscape recently. I am talking clinical use here. Outside school and clinic, I would not mind a few seconds here and there. This device is showing it's age, but if you can get a good deal on one (even used or refurbished from a trusted source) It really fits the bill for a work based device, IMHO.

Hi. I know this thread is a little moldy, but I thought I'd add my two cents. I am going to be purchasing a Blackberry Curve when my contract is up in two months (need the discount). I think that overall, it suits my needs for both phone and pda. It has a camera, superior sound and transmission quality on calls, plus the pda features of email, html browsing, as well as syncing up with your calendar (including outlook), 3rd party applications, and texting, etc. It is a fun device, and although it seems difficult to learn when you pick it up, most people I've talked to learn how to use it VERY quickly. Windows mobile can take a longer time to get used to. The ONLY drawback to the Curve that I see is that it doesn't have WiFi. One can only hope that they fix that obvious flaw in future models. Also, for any phone/pda like this, make sure you take a hard look at the data plans. You will have to have a data plan with blackberry, as there is no wifi on the curve. With windows mobile, you will likely have wifi, so you may be able to get by without a data plan as long as you only use those features in the hospital/at home/at coffee shops. If you like the immediacy of checking the web/email, though, you'll have to get a plan.

I would not recommend a PALM device if you are going for a phone/pda combo. EVERYONE I've talked to who has one of these is displeased. The biggest complain: poor call quality. My friend had THREE different Treo's, and ALL of them had an echo every time I called him. This is common, I've heard.

I would recommend going into your wireless provider's store and trying things out. My provider is AT&T, and I would even choose the blackberry over iPhone right now, because of the ability to have 3rd party apps and because I have trouble with typing on the iPhone keyboard (which is why I always recommend trying phones first). I've had both a palm and a windows based treo... I use the windows now and prefer it.

had a audiovox xv6700 pocket pc and chnaged to BB curve 8310 and I love it! Some programs dont work as well on the bb though, like Pepid RN suite (no bookmark capabilities etc) but hopefully the software developers will catch up and offer more for the BB.
