What size and brand of memory card?

What size and brand of memory card does everyone here use? I'm thinking about getting one because I just got a dell axim x51v and I don't want it to be slow from downloading programs onto it. I've looked on ebay and theres so many different brands and sizes adn I don't understand it all. I've read some bad things about scan disk and some good things. What are hte pros and cons of the different brands? Is it necefssary to have flash type?

thanks

Re: What size and brand of memory card?

Which Brand?

You're not limited to buying memory cards from the same company that made your PDA. Those often cost more and are rebranded anyhow. That means the Compaq or Palm branded memory cards are actually manufactured by the companies listed in this article (among others). Some no-name CompactFlash cards may actually offer slower data transfer rates since the CF standard has a wide range of acceptable transfer rates. Check out the left sidebar for some memory cards that we've reviewed and tested. They are widely available in stores and are companies with excellent reputations.

But which PDA takes what?

Use this table as a guideline.

PalmOne (newer models), several Palm OS Smartphones, Tapwave and Garmin iQUE: SD cards (preferred) and MMC cards

Handspring Visor: Springboard Modules

Sony CLIÉ: Memory Stick (NX and NZ models can also use CF)

Pocket PC and Handheld PC: CompactFlash (CF), (SD & MMC cards on many Pocket PC PDAs), PC Card memory and hard drives for 3000 and 5000 series iPAQs with PC Card expansion sleeves, IBM MicroDrive for those with a type II CF slot.

Note: The HP Jornada 540, 560 and 720 series have type I CF slots, not type II.

Re: What size and brand of memory card?

Maybe a little late, but I purchased a 1 Gig SD Card off of Ebay, and it hasn't given me any trouble.

(I have a HP iPAQ 2495b...Pocket PC.)

I have Sandisk but I don't think it matters too much what brand it is. I think the only difference between some brands is the speed but I've tried other brands and the speed seems to be the same for accessing memory from the memory card.

This one is a DANE-ELEC.

I agree that it doesn't really matter. I bought a 1 Gig SD Card for my PDA & a 512 MB SD card for my daughter's digital camera and paid less for both cards, plus S&H, than I would have buying a 1 Gig HP SD card.

I bought a 2 Gig SanDisk SD and I cant save any music or photos on it. I bought it off ebay also. I dont know if its just the card itself. I can save programs for the PDA on there.

That's strange - I'm assuming you're using the same 'program' to save potos as the program you use for savng PDA programs?

Can you access the card through Windows Explorer?

Do you have a Palm or Windows PDA? In the Palm Desktop (OS5), you can click on the "media" tab on the left, then "expansion" at the bottom, then "Add media" at the top. If you have a card reader, then you can add music files that way.

I have a Kingston 1GB SD card, and will probably be upgrading to a 2GB soon (and leave the 1GB for my Rio S50)
