Can any one tell me the purpose of a PDA? I'm starting nursing school this fall and I hvae no idea what a PDA a is? Please someone tell me what it is????

I've had a PDA for years, and in general I keep my calendar, contacts, and notes on there (not to mention some games, a musical notation program, a weight watchers program, etc.!).... I would not have bought one just for nursing school, but now that I'm done I will certainly use it for work.

Whether or not you need one depends on how you like to work... there's nothing on there that you absolutely _need_ if you are able to organize yourself in another way (on paper, for example). It can be anywhere as simple as a souped-up address and date book or as complicated as a complete reference guide for meds and such. If you like seeing things on paper, then stick with your reference books and texts and all that... I would say that you don't NEED to go buy a PDA at this point, certainly until you know what kinds of features you'd like. Just about everything on there you can do on paper... you just will have more books in your backpack.

I used a PDA all through nursing school, but it was a convenience not a necessity. Just a lot lighter to have my Med Guide and Tabers in a PDA rather than lugging the books around.

Most of my class did not have PDAs and did just fine.

I look at a PDA the same way I looked at a cell phone 15 years ago. Nice but not necessary. Now I only use a cell phone. I think having just a drug reference on a PDA would make it useful versus lugging around a book, but I haven't bought one yet because I don't know how to choose one and I'm a little concerned that PDAs are easy to steal. I believe that eventually I'll get a PDA, but not today.
