I was laid off 18 months ago. I did my job seach almot entirely from my PDA/cell phone. I was able to view websites, apply for jobs and email my resume to propspective employers and recieve phone calls.
My wife is a SALSA a an assisted living facility. Besides the calendar feaure, she can creat/view spread sheets. She on call 24 / for call outs, ect. She keeps her staffing schedule with her at all times.

Have the Palm TX.
I am in my first semester and just got it, so I am still "warming up."
Use Taber's all the time, it is right there beside me when i am reading so when I don't know/remember a word or an abrreviation I can look it up quickly. Love it! There are even some illustrations.
Davis's Drug Guide: Started meds this week-seams it will save a lot of time looking up drug names compared to using the book.(my classmates were exited about it too so I got to show it off Lots of potential!
Saunder's NCLEX Q & A: So far,Great to have when I have a few seconds waiting for the train.
Have the Skyscape Constellation, so it has some more things I have not used yet (RNotes, calculator, etc), but so far it is worth it just for the Taber's cyclopedia and not having to carry the books around.
Great feature: All the programs are linked, so you can move from one program to another (and back) to get additional information, (look up a disease definition or a NCLEX Q's etc) on the same topic!!
I am glad I got it!

i use my PDA (Palm treo 600 - the original release, ancient therefore) to remind me of post-med v/s for patients taking anti-HPN meds, keeping track of the dizzying pace of seminars we have to attend as my hospital is seeking JCI accreditation, keeping track of my duty-days and off-days, keeping residents' and consultants numbers, etc. etc. - in other words, it rules my life.

I too use a pocket pc rather than a palm. Mine is an HP, I don't remember the actual numbers...
But I am an RN now. I used mine to get through clinicals and classes!! It was my bible!!
I did and still used the calandar for the hectic schedules...student, wife, mother... it was great..and if it wasn't in my calandar..I didn't make it to the appointments!!
I also have Tabers, Davis Drug guide, and Epocraties!!! Great Software!! I couldn't have made it through my clinicals with out them!! I too converted several nursing staff, and even a couple of instructors!! I had more benefits to my pocket pc than fellow students who were using Palms, and a few of them too converted to the Pocket PC. I too use the WiFi internet constantly, as well as the recording feature, the notes...and the ease fo being able to transfer documents back and fourth from PDA & my laptop...Fabulous!!!
I can't imagine my life both professionaly and personally with out it!!!! It was and is the best money I spent to get through college. I even have extra memory cards with just my song list downloaded onto them, and I work midnight shift...so when I am done with duties, and am charting..I like to pull up my music files, and listen to my favs while I chart. and finish all my nightly paperwork for my unit.
I also love the conversion calculators!!! Those and the Drug guide have been literal life savers!!!

SEASTWOODRN, Just curious what you found to be superior over Palm PDAs. I'm looking to purchase a Palm PDA, but am wondering what drawbacks there may be. Thanks!

The PDA's (pocket pc) run on a windows platform. It basically has a desk top on it just like a convetional Windows Operated pc. So, it has the start menu, outlook express is integrated, so downloading my e-mail is automatic with each sync with my lap top pc, and then I can read my e-mail messages while on the go, while I'm waiting at appointments. Same with my contacts. MS word documents are then of course transerrable, between my pocket pc and my laptop, so I can work on documents when I am away from home. Same with MS Excel spreadsheet, which We were required to do our clinical paperwork in....So while other classmates weren't able to work on their clinical paperwork while on the clinical floor / site...I was able to input information into my clinical paperwork right there at the site...saving me more time for sleep and family. At the time, there were also more programs for Medicine and nursing available for the Microsoft platforms than there were palms available. I don't know much of anything about the palm, just what the classmates that I had said that after they took a spin or two on mine bought a pocket pc and got rid of their palms, or came to myself and others with pocket pc's for reference materials that they couldn't run on thier palms.
Hope this was of some help.

I have a life drive. I never though about putting lectures on it. I do however use it for student schedules and things of that nature. I also have and use PEPID on it.

Most of this info is sadly incorrect regarding Palm. With Documents to go, a program loaded on all newer (from... 03 or newer I think?), you can do all of what you can above. The palm is also MUCH easier to learn, and more... user oriented. Can you tell I'm also an Apple/Mac person??? I work on all the above on both my home computer and my Palm and transfer back and forth as needed.

I don't know about the pocket PC, but I do know the palm does come with documents to go, and that does make it so you can edit word documents on it, as well as anything else you need done to microsoft documents, including excell AND the all-famous powerpoint! I love my PDA so far. I definitely could get through school without one (only in my first qtr), but it has made life easier.

Has any one used a smart phone PDA while in nursing school and or in the real world practice as a nurse?
I currently have a Palm Treo 700wx. Perfect for my career choice right now. I'm hoping to be a nursing student fall of 2008.
