Starter PDA / Nursing School

I'm starting nursing school this coming fall and am looking for a PDA to use throughout. I'm looking for some advice on what type of PDA would be my best bet to purchase.

I'm looking for a PDA to use through nursing school which can support notes, powerpoint slides, word documents, etc, general notetaking. I also want it to support the various programs to use which will aid me in clinicals; i.e. drug guides, etc.

Any guidance or help would be very appreciated.

The Palm TX is probably what most nurses have right now and really like from what I have heard and read. I would give a good look to the Iphone or Ipod Touch as the companies that make the nursing software are now building software for these platforms and they are, in my opinion, a nicer platform than the Palm. If you have AT&T for cellular service they will be releasing a new iphone in September.

BSUCraig,

Why would you consider Ipod Touch/Iphone's platform better than a Palm's? I am seriously considering a Palm T/X, but was wondering what you found to be detrimental about Palm's platform? Thanks!

Amanda

You have to be connected to a wireless network to use skyscape programs on an iphone or itouch. Not very useful....unless you only need to use a drugbook in a hotspot.

Which is a shame, as they are nice.

Apple's SDK may help the scene latter, I don't know....

I am personally opting for a IPAQ 210/211 (210 and 211 are the same unit)

The TX would be my choice if my budget was limited.

Tablet PCs look nice on paper, but have a boot up time.

Re: Starter PDA / Nursing School

IPAQ 211
Pros: Best screen, replaceable battery, power, can switch to horizontal or vertical screen view
Cons:Funky UP button, many report hiss on headphones, price, not the best touch performance

Palm TX
Pros: great touch performance, palm OS, reliable, cheap
Cons: Battery not user replaceable - this effectively limits the lifespan of the unit - replacing cost a lot of money, dated screen

iphones are real, real new. the software available is about 1/10000 of palm's. I would wait for this to mature. also, the costs of the iphone is high, especially if you already have a phone, not to mention the higher costs of internet surfing on these.

palm is going nowhere fast. however, if you have one, and use it as a reference and media device, I cannot see anyone wanting much more. It has a decent sized screen and resolution for the size, and uses industry standard removable media (CHEAP SD CARDS!!)

These are great points. For a cheap and simple reference point and media device, it is hard to not like the palm, even though it is getting old. It was an incredible thing almost 4 years ago when it came out, and it is still pretty damn good. Tablet PC's / eee are great, but at least triple the cost, and not very functional in a hosptial setting.

battery can be replaced and the little tiny screw driver is often bundled with the replacement batteries sold on eBay!! the screen may be dated, but you can with movies in landscape mode shrunk down to 300 megs that look pretty good as compared side by side with a smaller screened ipod video my GF has. I wouldn't trade my palm for nuttin'...

Have you (or anyone else) performed this screw driver battery replacement? I'm also busy evaluating potential PDAs and the "non-user-replaceable battery" has given me pause. I found a site that offered instructions on how to replace the T/X battery, but they also gave a warning that soldering would be required.

I'm totally comfortable fiddling with batteries, but soldering, well, not-so-much... (which is why I've been leaning towards going the iPaq route).
